VARANASI: A youth died in police custody in Mirzapur district on Monday after being allegedly thrashed by cops.  A mob attached the police outpost and damaged vehicles, prompting police to resort to a lathi-charge.

Inspector general of police (Varanasi zone) GL Meena has ordered a probe into the incident. Superintendent of police Suresh Pandey suspended Rajaram, the incharge of Patheria outpost where the death occurred, and a constable.

The deceased has been identified as Mahesh Kol, 28, a resident of Rampur village in Madihan tehsil of Mirzapur. Following the incident, his father Raghunath tried to commit suicide by jumping into the Ganga but villagers saved him. According to reports, policemen from Pathera outpost arrested Mahesh Kol early on Monday morning on the allegation of compelling a woman to elope with him.

During interrogation, the outpost incharge Rajaram allegedly thrashed Mahesh, causing his death. Initially, Rajaram tried to mislead senior police officers and the district administration by saying Mahesh had committed suicide inside the toilet of the police outpost. After getting information about the incident, Madihan subdivisional magistrate Jiyalal, the tehsildar, the circle officer and superintendent of police rushed to the spot.
