City police commissioner Shivanand Jha, while briefing city crime branch and woman police station officials recently, advocated handling of women's harassment cases by the woman police station. The senior city police officials said that with adequate staff at woman police station available now, all cruelty/harassment cases will now be handled by its personnel.

City police authorities said that the activities of the woman police station have been bifurcated in three parts - prevention, detection and protection.

"Earlier there was staff crunch but now we have an assistant commissioner of police, a police inspector, five sub-inspectors and 20 police constables in addition to a team of woman SRP at the police station at Mithakhali. According to the new directive, city police stations will first register the complaint under the provisions of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005," said a crime branch official.

The official said that the prevalent practice is to register case under IPC Section 498(A) where husband of the woman or his relative subjects her to cruelty. Now, these cases will be directed to the woman police station for further investigation where women will get legal aid and counselling if she wishes to.

"Among other actions under the notification is deployment of two quick response teams (QRTs) in each police sector of the city, patrolling at public places, bus stands and colleges to prevent harassment, implementation and advertisement of woman helpline 1091 and conducting seminars at schools and colleges for confidence building and self defence," said the official.
