Shibir activist killed in clash with police

A Shibir activist has been killed in a clash between police and his party men at Maijdee Court under Sadar upazila in Noakhali.

The deceased was identified as Omar Farooq, 22, of village Kadir Hanif of Sadar upazila of the district.

The incident took place following the cancellation of the review petition for the death penalty of war crimes convict Jamaat leader Kamaruzzaman on Monday.

Police arrested two Shibir activists during the clash, one of them were injured with bullet.

The arrestees are bullet-hit Rakib 20, son of Abu Taher of Maijdee, who was under treatment of police custody and Rusel, 22, son of Md Nurul Kader of village Ekabbarpur of Chandragonj under Begumgonj upazila of the district.

Anowar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Sudharam Model police station said 10 to 15 Shibir activists disguised as passers-by attempted to vandalize vehicles after the cancellation of the review petition of Kamaruzzaman.

When the police came to stop them, they opened fire at the police. Police also retaliated by firing back to protect themselves. At one point, police arrested three Shibir activists from the spot.

Of them, one was found with head injury and another injured with bullet in the back.

After they were taken to the hospital, the on-duty doctor declared Omar Farooq dead.

The injured Rakib was admitted to Noakhali Abdul Malek Ukil Medical College Hospital under police custody and the rest one Rasel was arrested, the OC said.

The body of Farooq was sent to Noakhali Abdul Malek Ukil Medical College Hospital for autopsy.

Filing a case was underway till filing the report.
