A 24-year-old policeman was arrested on Sunday on the charge of attempting to rape a minor Dalit girl of village Khamana under the Panikoili police station in Jajpur district.

The 15-year-old girl had gone to the Sankhchila market on Saturday to purchase dresses when the accused, Ananda Chandra Prusti of Thakurapatana village, in an inebriated state tried to rape her.

Prusti offered her three hundred rupees and asked her to sit on his motorcycle. As the girl refused, he molested and tried to rape her.

Hearing the girl's cry, some locals caught hold of Prusti. Prusti works in the Special Security Battalion in Bhubaneswar. Recently, he came to his village on leave, said Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of Panikoili police station Purna Chandra Patayat.

On Saturday evening, the girl filed an FIR against Prusti, following which police rushed to the village and arrested the accused under Sections 376/ 511 (attempt to rape), 354 (outraging the modesty of a girl) and Section 8 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offence Act, 2012 and Section 6 of the SC and ST (Atrocity Prevention) Act, 1989.

The girl and the accused were medically examined in the Government hospital at Jajpur town on Sunday, added the police officer.
