Police officer denies assault on MDP chairperson

A police officer indicted for assaulting Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) chairperson 'Reeko' Moosa Manik on 7 February 2012 when President Mohamed Nasheed was toppled from power has denied the charges.

Mohamed Waheed, from Rosy Villa in Gaaf Dhaal atoll Thinadhoo island, at the Criminal Court hearing on August 20 asked for a lawyer to be appointed for him.

The hearing was adjourned after the judge stated that the trial will continue with the defendant's legal representation.

Police is accused of brutality towards MDP members and general members of the public at the Republic Square on February 7.

The State has indicted police officer Ibrahim Faisal, of Machchangolhi ward's Ravsa house, for assaulting Nasheed's spokesperson and Machchangolhi North Member of Parliament (MP) Mariya Ahmed Didi on that day but he has also denied the charges.
