Dhaka, July 2: US Ambassador in Bangladesh Dan W Mozena on Tuesday stressed that the government should finalise the rules of the Human Trafficking Deterrence and Suppression Act 2012 to facilitate its full implementation. “I think the greatest need now is for the government to finalise the implementing rules to facilitate full implementation of the 2012 anti-trafficking law,” he said.

Mozena was addressing a national conference on the 2012 Trafficking in Persons Law and the National Plan of Action (2012-14) at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre.

The US envoy also recommended steps to reduce the cost of migration.  “I hope Bangladesh will move to the global model of eliminating recruitment fees paid by workers; such fees fuel trafficking,” he pointed out.

Terming human trafficking as ‘modern slavery’, Mozena said he believes the people, civil society and the government of Bangladesh are deeply committed to protecting its citizens from the scourge of trafficking.
