A legal notice was served on the government yesterday seeking an explanation on why police fired at Rajshahi University's (RU) general students while they were holding a peaceful movement on the campus on February 2.

The notice also asked to inform whether regulations on police firing had been followed, adding that appropriate legal action would be initiated against the respondents if they did not provide the information in 24 hours.

Meanwhile, Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Detective Branch (DB) claimed to have recovered two abandoned foreign made pistols during a raid behind RU's Nawab Abdul Latif Hall around 1:30am, reports our RU correspondent.

Talking to The Daily Star, DB Inspector Sayedur Rahman Bhuyian claimed that some criminals had left the arms there sensing the presence of police.

On February 2, police had fired rubber bullets and teargas shells at the students fleeing an armed onslaught by Bangladesh Chhatra League activists, leaving over 100 students injured. The students were protesting evening master's programmes and hike in some fees.

Afterwards, the campus was vacated and shut for an indefinite period.

Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua, on behalf of six eminent personalities, served the notice on the home secretary, inspector general of police, Rajshahi Metropolitan Police commissioner and Rajshahi's Motihar Police Station officer-in-charge.

The six are Khushi Kabir, coordinator of Nijera Kori; Swapon Adnan, a retired teacher of Chittagong University; Prof Manosh Kumar Chowdhury of Jahangirnagar University's anthropology; and three Dhaka University teachers -- Prof Rafiqullah Khan of Bangla, Associate Prof Fahmidul Haq of mass communication and journalism and Associate Prof Mohammad Tanzimuddin Khan of international relations.
