UP government Thursday posted IPS officer Rajesh Modak as Varanasi SSP, replacing Ajay Kumar Mishra, nearly a month after he was suspended for allegedly "beating" three of his subordinates during his tenure as SSP Moradabad.

"A departmental inquiry is pending against Modak. But, he has been reinstated," said Special Task Force IG Ashish Gupta, on behalf of DGP Headquarters.

Modak was suspended on September 22, a day after he had allegedly beaten up his three police followers —- Gumaan Singh, Daya Kishan and Sundar Sengar —- with a plastic floor-wiper at his official residence for keeping S T Hasan, Samajwadi Party's Lok Sabha candidate from Moradabad, waiting when he came to SSP residence.

Last week, UP Governor secretariat, after getting a letter from a social activist on the matter, had sent a communique to Home Department "for suitable action against" Modak.

Meanwhile, Mishra, whom Modak has replaced as Varanasi SSP, is also facing an inquiry by Varanasi Range DIG for allegedly harassing his subordinate Additional SP (Traffic) Gopesh Nath Khanna.

Mishra had written to the DGP requesting for Khanna's transfer and recommending a probe into an alleged case of corruption against the additional SP. Following this, Varanasi unit of Anti-Corruption Organisation initiated a probe against Khanna.

The Additional SP, on the other hand, submitted a letter to Varanasi Zone IG, G L Meena, alleging Mishra withdrew his driver, official vehicle and the follower on October 16 without giving any reason. The IG forwarded the letter to the DGP headquarters on the basis of which an inquiry was ordered against Mishra on Sunday.

Mishra has now been posted as SP with Anti-Corruption Organisation Headquarters, Lucknow while Khanna has been appointed the deputy commandant of Provincial Armed Constabulary's Bareilly-based 8th battalion.
