Five Delhi policemen were arrested Friday for allegedly beating to death a 47-year-old man in Dhanari area of Sambhal.
The victim has been identified as Kushiram.

Kushiram's son Raju told police that Delhi policemen picked his father from their house for questioning in a motorcycle theft case, and took him to an isolated place and thrashed him, resulting in his death.

Sambhal Circle Officer Amar Singh said the postmortem report will ascertain the cause of death, adding that no criminal case was pending against Kushiram. Singh said Kushiram, who was a farmer, had purchased the motorcycle about a year ago from a local resident.

Based on Raju's complaint, police have lodged an FIR against five cops, slapping charges of murder on them. They have been arrested and sent to jail.

Earlier, after Kushriam's death, the angry locals gheraoed the Dhanari police station. Senior police officials later reached the spot and assured protesters of action against the policemen, who include assistant sub-inspector Satish Chand, head constable Vijay Singh, and constables Praveen Kumar, Sandeep and Satendra.

The Uttar Pradesh Police seized two cars in which the Delhi policemen had come to Sambhal. Station Officer of Dhanari police station Rajdeep Singh Yadav said the Delhi policemen said they were attached with the Special Task Force.

They also did not inform the local police before picking up Kushiram but reached the police station fearing attack from the mob.

Delhi police told Sambhal police that while they were taking Kushiram to Delhi, he began to feel uneasy and died later. DCP (New Delhi) S B S Tyagi said Kushiram's post-mortem report did not reveal any external injuries and heart attack was believed to be the cause of his death.

"Our men had informed the sarpanch of the village and were taking the man to the local police station when he suffered an epileptic attack. The villagers were present at the spot when he suffered the attack. The man was offered water, but he passed away. There were protests and our men were arrested for no fault. We have been coordinating with the UP Police. We will approach the court for bail in the case," Tyagi said.

Tyagi also said Khusiram had been arrested for allegedly receiving stolen motorcycles.

Sambhal Circle Officer Amar Singh said Kushiram, a farmer, had purchased the motorcycle nearly a year ago from a local resident.
