Six persons, including four policemen, were booked after Rajkot Central Jail officials found two mobiles from gangster Mukesh Harjani and his aide Naresh Uttambhai during a surprise check on Thursday.

The four constables booked for abetment of crime are Kiritsinh Solanki, Mayur Virda, Shivbhadrasinh Gohil and Vijay Chavda.

Sources said during the checking, the officials came across two mobiles and three batteries from high security yard number six in the jail. Preliminary investigations found that the accused constables knew that Harjani keeps a mobile in the jail and they were possibly involved in the smuggling the mobile phones into the jail.

Harjani was earlier lodged in Vadodara Central Jail and was transferred to Rajkot Central Jail a few months ago. Many criminal cases are registered against him, including those of kidnapping, extortion and murder.

Sources said as many as 11 mobiles phones have been recovered from prisoners during the last one-and-a-half months from Rajkot jail. The jail authorities have intensified the surprise checking after they started finding mobile phones on prisoners in large numbers.

Recently, the Gujarat Director General of Police (DGP) PC Thakur had a issued a notification directing a mandatory surprise checking in all jails in the state. The notification was issued in view of increasing incidents of mobile phones being found in jails and other crimes.
