Cops chain man, beat him up in police station

A 50-year-old man was chained and beaten up by police at Prithvipur police station in Tikamgarh on Wednesday. He was accused of beating a sub-inspector by hanging him from a tree and snatching his service revolver, besides cultivating ganja.

The incident took place after a sub-inspector A R Tiwari was rushed with some constables to look into a land dispute between two families in Birora Khet village. Amit Singh, SP, Tikamgarh alleged, Roop Singh Yadav overpowered Tiwari and hanged him from a neem tree. The cop was badly beaten up, he said.

SP told TOI that when the accused refused to free the SI, additional force was sent and he was freed. The service revolver of the cop was also found in a farm, he said.

Later, when Roop was brought to thana, his hands were tied and was beaten up with a police baton by additional SP Sunil Tiwari in full public view. The accused has been booked under sections of loot, attacking a government servant and NDPS act (Narcotic Drugs And Psychotropic Substance Act), he added.

Defending the public thrashing of Roop Singh, SP said, "CrPc gives us power to beat a person to make recovery. The media should also show the way SI Tiwari was beaten up."
