In a new initiative to ensure safety of women, city police have decided to provide pick-up and drop facilities for those stranded after 8 pm without any mode of transport. Police officers will accompany the women to the nearest means of transportation available or even drop them home.

A decision in this regard endeavour, which is part of the Suraksha Setu project, was taken on Saturday at a meeting of top police officers of the city at the police headquarters in Shahibaug.

Dr Mira Ramnivas chaired the discussion that was attended by all ACPs and DCPs of Ahmedabad.

“Women can seek our help after 8pm by calling on our helpline: 1091. The message will be conveyed to a PCR van nearby which will immediately reach the spot to help the woman. She will be dropped at her place free of cost,” said NN Chaudhari, DCP-Zone 3.

The issue of security of senior citizens was also discussed at the meeting; and in yet another important decision, all senior police inspectors have been directed to maintain a steady connect with senior citizens residing in their jurisdiction and help them in any manner possible. The elderly will get all kinds of help from police, including taking them to hospital and arranging for their medicines.

“All police inspectors will have to make a list of senior citizens in their area. They are required to visit them at least once a week and ask them if they need any help. This will ensure safety of the aged,” said Chaudhari.

It was also decided that city police would arrange for field trips to police stations so that children are aware of the functioning of the police.
