The government is considering enacting a specific law to realise compensation for the damage caused by pro-hartal activists, Home Minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir said yesterday.

Those who call hartal will be held responsible for any death in hartal violence, he added.

The minister made the remarks while talking to journalists after attending a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club in the capital.

“Those who enforce hartal and vandalise vehicles, loot shops and bar people from going to hospitals will have to give compensation. We are thinking about enacting a law,” he said.

Cases will be filed against the hartal enforcers under penal codes 302, 304 and 307, he added.

Terming vandalism and violence during the hartal hours unconstitutional and immoral, the minister said the government was determined to prevent any such undesirable activities.

“People do not accept shutdown as the opposition leaders hid in their homes during hartal hours,” he told newsmen.

Cultural Affairs Minister Abul Kalam Azad and Prime Minister’s Media Adviser Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, among others, spoke at the discussion organised by Bangladesh Awami Forum.
