Community Policing Can Root Out Menaces

LAHORE - Community policing countries can counter crime and protect life and property of common man while a peaceful environment in society can easily be evolved.

These views were expressed by speakers at Hameed Nizami Press Institute of Pakistan addressing a seminar on ‘Importance and Need of Community Policing’ on Saturday.

Former federal minister for law Ahmar Bilal Sufi presided while Additional Inspector General Police Sarmad Saeed and noted analyst Iftikhar Ahmad were the chief guests on occasion. Speakers included senior journalist Sarfraz Syed, Lawyers Foundation for Justice President Feroze Shah Gillani and Daily Nawaiwaqt Crime Reporter Ehsan Shaukat. HNPIP Director Absar Abdul Ali was the moderator.

Ahmar Bilal Sufi said that had they exercised community policing in Sindh the rangers would not been called to rescue the city and restore law and order situation.  He said that lack of legal awareness and community policing have added to the worries of both the police as well as the public at large. He said that the lacunas must be addressed to devise a strategy to dig out terrorism.

Punjab AIG Sarmad Saeed while highlighting significance of community policing said that it had been practiced in the British India and the West has been practicing it today in a good manner. Citing example of Turkey, he maintained that by practicing Community Policing made the society a heaven and crime free. It spends over 7.5 b Dollars on police. London Police has over 48000 personnel in London with maximum facilities including two million cameras; he said adding Pakistan spends only Rs 57 per one man protection.
