The High Court on Sunday asked the police to transfer the case of assaulting television journalist Nadia Sharmin by Hefajat-e-Islam men on April 6 to the Detective Branch of police for investigation.

The bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Houqe and Justice ABM Altaf Hossain asked the inspector general of police and the Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner to hand over the case in seven days.

After hearing a writ petition filed by Bangladesh Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh secretary Asaduzzaman Siddiqui, the court asked the health secretary to form a medical board with senior professors to provide Nadia Sharmin with treatment.

The court also asked the health services director general to ensure proper treatment of Nadia Sharmin at a government hospital at the cost of the government money.

It asked the home secretary and the police to report the court the compliance with the orders in three weeks.
The bench also asked the authorities to explain in four weeks why they would not be asked to find out the miscreants liable for the torture on Nadia Sharmin and to bring them to book.

Private channel Ekushey Television reporter Nadia Sharmin was assaulted by Hafajat men on April 6, when she went to cover a rally of the Islamist outfit in Shapla Square in the city.

Shahbagh police had filed a case against Hefajat men for assaulting and beating Nadia Sharmin.
