Bihari community leaders yesterday demanded arrest of those who were behind the capital's Kurmitola Bihari camp killing, irrespective of their political affiliations.

They also sought the prime minister's intervention in the arrest of the culprits, compensation for the victims' families, rehabilitation of those who faced financial losses during the deadly violence, and release of the arrested members of the community.

They made the demands at a press conference organised by the Nasim Khan Foundation, which was named after a deceased Bihari leader, at the office of the Crime Reporters' Association in the capital.

Wakil Ahmed, general secretary of the foundation, said as per media reports ruling party-backed local lawmaker and police had connection with the incident.

“We want arrest of the culprits no matter how influential they are,” he said.

During the violence on June 14 in Mirpur's Kurmitola, at least nine members of a family were burnt to death when eight homes at the camp for stranded Pakistanis were torched. Another person, hit by bullets, died in a hospital.

The clashes erupted between Biharis and locals on the night of Shab-e-Barat, the holy night of fortune.

During the clashes, locals were allegedly joined by the police.

Harun-ur-Rashid, president of the foundation that also works for the development of Biharis, urged the government to ensure security of all Biharis at 70 camps in 13 districts across the country.

Meanwhile, Bihari people living in Rangpur formed a human chain under the banner of Stranded Pakistanis General Repatriation Committee (SPGRC) in front of the Rangpur Press Club yesterday noon, protesting arson attack and killing of ten people of the community in the capital.

They also demanded exemplary punishment for the killers.

They submitted a memorandum to the prime minister through Farid Ahmed, deputy commissioner of Rangpur. In the morning, they brought out a procession from Alamnagar area in the city.
