A Central Bureau of Investigation court on Friday convicted 17 police officials for the fake encounter of an MBA graduate and for destroying evidence in Dehradun in 2009, television reports said.

The court will pronounce the quantum of punishment to the convicts on Monday.

The Ranbir Singh fake encounter case had rocked the state of Uttarakhand. On July 3, 2009, the Uttarakhand cops gunned down the 22-year-old MBA graduate, from Ghaziabad, in cold blood. The policemen claimed that Ranbir – along with his friends – was involved in an extortion racket and was trying to commit a crime when they were caught at Mohini Road. It was alleged that the boy was killed while trying to escape.

However, following the plea made by Ravindra Singh, the murdered boy’s father, the Supreme Court transferred the case to Delhi.
