14,000 police personnel to be recruited by year end

The State Government on Wednesday decided to undertake fresh appointment 6,456 police personnel in various ranks from constable to officer level in order to strengthen the overall police administration.

"I have directed the Home Department authorities to start the process of recruitment soon. The task should be completed in the current year," said Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik after a high level meeting at the State Secretariat.

According to official sources, with the new intake, the total posting of cops in different ranks in police administration would be 14, 025. This would include absorbing of 3,000 present tribal Special Police Officers (SPOs) as constables in the Odisha Auxiliary Police Force (OAPF). The tribal SPOs were recruited earlier at a remuneration of Rs 4,500 per month.

It said that while the process of recruitment was already on covering the rank of officers, constables and firemen against 7,569 posts, fresh recruitment for 3,456 officers, constables and other ranks would be started soon for completion by the year end.

The total recruitment of 11,025 personnel includes raising of one Odisha Industrial Security Force (OISF) battalion for industrial security and one Specialised India Reserve battalion, which would provide a fillip to construction activities in the Maoist affected areas, sources informed.

Sources also said that apart from strengthening the general law and order apparatus, the new recruitment will also provide manpower support for Mahila and Sishu desks in various police stations; strengthen marine police and upgrade technical capacity of State Forensic Science Laboratory.
