Maldivian Democracy Network

The Maldivian Democracy Network (MDN) is a peaceful and non-partisan NGO established after mass arrests and allegations of abuse in prisons in August 2004. It was previously known as the Maldivian Detainee Network. MDN is the first non-governmental human rights organisations to be formed in the country. Although not officially registered until June 2005, MDN worked to create a network of families and friends of people in detention in response to popular concerns over police impunity and lack of judicial independence in the Maldives.

The Maldivian Democracy Network has now broadened its mandate to protect and promote human rights through lobbying, awareness raising and monitoring efforts. We do however still retain our commitment to detainee rights and are the primary source of information on Maldivian detainees for the international community such as the Commonwealth, Amnesty International, the ICRC, the United Nations and other respected actors in the international community.
